They must have been watching him all the time, the way a child watches a parent: watching him heal people, watching him speak to the crowds, watching him spending time with outcasts, and, today, watching him pray. And of all the things they see Jesus do, the one thing they ask about is prayer. We don’t hear the disciples say, “Lord, teach us to heal,”.

HOMILY - 17TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR C. -Fr. Martin Browne OSB. There is a touch of comedy about the scene in today's first reading, as Abraham negotiates with God. God is angry with the people of Sodom and Gomorrah and is planning to destroy them. Emboldened by his obvious favour in God's eyes, Abraham dares to try to talk God. The second principle is that in every prayer we should acknowledge the supreme holiness or sublime majesty of God. This is done first by approaching God in prayer with due reverence. Secondly, we acknowledge His supreme holiness by praising Him. “THY KINGDOM COME; THY WILL BE DONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN”. HOMILY - 17TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR C. -Fr. Martin Browne OSB. There is a touch of comedy about the scene in today's first reading, as Abraham negotiates with God. In today’s first reading, Abraham, our father in faith, demonstrated extraordinary courage. Without fear, he approached God and boldly interceded on behalf of Lot, his nephew. He stood in the gap for Lot’s Family in Sodom and Gomorrah. Through this, he demonstrated that he was a great intercessor.

The fire Jesus wants to spread is the fire of the Holy Spirit (Ex.3:2, Acts 2:2-4). It's the fire of divine love. It's burning inside Jesus and he wants to pour it into our hearts. This fire is the very opposite of indifference. When the fire of God's love fills our hearts, things are never quite the same again. Homily for July 29, 2012: 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
